Document Preparation and Production (DPP) - Four Options For Placing IMB on Mail

There are four options in the transaction document creation and mailing process to put IMBs on paper:

  • Document Composition
  • Document Re-Engineering post-composition
  • Electronic Commingling
  • External Sortation
Document Composition
In many ways adding IMBs during the Document Composition step is the easiest. If IMBs can be added here it simplifies the overall production process. For IMB Full, the Document Composition system needs to interface to the system generating and tracking the Unique IDs to obtain a Unique ID for each document or mail piece.

Document Re-Engineering Post-composition
Unfortunately, many organizations may not be able to place IMBs during composition. There may not be sufficient resources to make the production modifications, or the transaction print data stream may come in already composed without the ability to reach back and change the generation process.

Adding IMBs post-composition allows you to simultaneously clean up all your transaction print streams while adding the IMBs you need. Other document re-engineering options are to add 2D barcodes for ADF, check address blocks, and add more marketing messages.

Electronic Commingling
Many organizations are finding that by commingling multiple smaller print streams into one larger stream (or a few larger streams, sorted by criteria such as weight or number of inserts) they can gain efficiencies. During this commingling process IMBs can be added to the documents and mail pieces in the new streams.
External Sortation
Some organizations choose to outsource their sortation. Their outsourcer can add IMBs either as a Document Re-engineering step or as an Electronic Commingling step.
Incremental Implementation
Most organizations will not have the luxury of selecting only one of these four for all their transactional mail. Due to the diversity of lines of business applications, different software systems, legacy applications and time to market windows, frequently a different option to add IMBs will have to be chosen for your applications. You need to find a vendor who is flexible and can assist you in adding IMBs in all four possible process options.

We recommend you start small. Select one or two lines of business with a common option and replace your POSTNET™ and Planet Code barcodes with IMB Basic. This provides basic postal discounts and gives you initial experience in getting IMBs on paper.
