What is the Unique ID?
The basis of IMB's ability to allow mail piece tracking, both internally and externally, is a 15 digit tracking number unique within a 45 day window. This 15 digit number is composed of two components:
Mailer ID
Mailers will be assigned a Mailer ID by the USPS.
From the USPS Mailed ID Usage Guide:
- A Mail Owner who mails 10 million or more pieces annually will be assigned a 6-Digit MID. A Mail Owner can request additional 6-digit Mailer IDs based upon need with a maximum of one MID per 10 million pieces in annual mail volume.
- A Mail Owner who mails less than 10 million annually will be assigned a 9-Digit MID. A Mail Owner can request additional 9-digit Mailer IDs based upon need with a maximum of one 9-digit MID per 1 million pieces in annual mail volume.
Serial Number
Serial Numbers are either a 6 digit (if the Mailer ID is 9 digits) or a 9 digit (if the Mailer ID is 6 digits) number which, when combined with the Mailer ID, must be unique within a 45 day rolling window.
Where do Unique IDs come from?
Unique IDs must be generated and placed on each mail piece by you somewhere within your mail creation and generation process. See DPP - Four Options For Placing IMB on Mail for a discussion on where and how IMBs can be placed on your mail.
To insure you meet the 45 day requirement, typically requires an internal process within your transaction document and mail production environment which tracks all Unique IDs currently within the 45 day limit and can issue unused Serial Numbers to calling routines or processes.
IMB Mail Piece Tracking
Together, the Unique ID and the Mailer ID forms a 15 digit string. This 15 digit number is the basis for IMB mail piece tracking.
