    Overview

PRO Meta to PCL provides a smooth migration path for Xerox printer customers who want to move their applications to distributed Desktop and LAN printers without making costly application changes.

PRO Meta to PCL dynamically converts Xerox LCDS and Metacode documents to PCL for printing on Desktop and LAN printers. PCL documents can also be sent to a file for database storage or archival.

With PRO Meta to PCL, Xerox fonts appear the same on Desktop and LAN printers as they do on Xerox printers.

With its sophisticated tailoring capability, PRO Meta to PCL can support unique applications and configurations. Custom fonts and logos are dynamically transformed to PCL, providing superior image fidelity. Character and word placement is identical to that on Xerox printers.

PRO Meta to PCL runs on a multitude of platforms including MVS, Unix, AIX and Windows.

    Output Optimized for Performance

PRO Meta to PCL is optimized for production-speed and performance with low resource usage and fast execution time.

PRO Meta to PCL supports an unlimited number of printers in any network configuration. Support is provided for edge-to-edge printing, multiple copy printing and, all Xerox black and white printing functionality.

    Multiple Uses

PRO Meta to PCL can be used for applications such as:

    • Printing Xerox LCDS and metacode output on Desktop or LAN printers
    • Migrating output from centralized print centers into a "distribute and print" operation
    • Transferring Xerox centralized print applications ontonetwork-centric printers
    • Workload balancing
    • Viewing
    • Disaster recovery
    • Reprinting
    The Best Approach

PRO Meta to PCL is the best approach because it provides the following:

    • It eliminates the need to rewrite applications.
    • Outstanding performance combined with exceptional quality.
    • A choice of platforms that includes MVS, Unix, AIX or Windows.
    • The least cost combined with the best architecture.
    Flexible Resource Management

The key to the power and flexibility of PRO Meta to PCL is the way it manages print resources. As a default PRO Meta to PCL automatically converts Xerox resources into PCL resources, thus optimizing and simplifying the implementation process.

Xerox fonts can either be automatically converted to PCL bitmap fonts or mapped to printer-resident PCL fonts. Xerox forms are automatically converted to PCL macros and IMG images are converted to PCL compressed images, which are embedded in the output PCL file. Converted fonts, logos and images can be kept and reused, thus speeding up the transform process.

    Multiple Platforms

PRO Meta to PCL runs on the following platforms:

  • Windows XP, NT, 95, 98, ME, 2000
  • AIX
  • Solaris
  • Linux
  • HP-UX
  • z/OS - all versions

    Product Specification

    Print Stream Support

PRO Meta to PCL is based on the PRO Meta interpreter that supports all of the Xerox centralized printer capabilities including:

    • Xerox metacode output from applications such as DocuMerge, Compuset, CSF and XICS
    • LCDS print streams
    • Dynamic Job Descriptor Entries (DJDE)
    • Job Source Language (JSL)

In addition, PRO Meta to PCL has been enhanced to be a replacement for the Xerox Remote Print Management Facility (RPMF) Print Management Utility (PMU).

    Resource Support

PRO Meta to PCL contains support for an extensive array of Xerox print resources including:

  • Xerox fonts (FNT)
  • Xerox logos (LGO)
  • Images (IMG)
  • Forms (FRM)
  • Job Source Language (JSL)
  • Page Descriptor Entries (PDE)
  • Copy Modification Entries (CME)
  • Job Descriptor Entries (JDE)
  • Font Handling

Superior font management is the key to providing a successful print transform program and PRO Meta to PCL provides the utmost flexibility for font utilization.

PRO Meta to PCL provides several methods for handling fonts, which can be mixed and matched as appropriate. The user can:

    • Automatically convert Xerox fonts into PCL fonts and download them to the printer with each job
    • The PRO Meta to PCL font conversion utility supports the conversion of fonts from the Xerox centralized print format and the Xerox distributed print format into standard PCL bitmap fonts. When they are needed, the fonts are converted and downloaded to the printer.
    • Provide a table to map between Xerox fonts and PCL fonts
    • PRO Meta to PCL offers an option of mapping Xerox fonts to PCL printer based fonts. This eliminates the need for downloading the soft fonts in the document.

    Logo Handling
PRO Meta to PCL provides the utmost flexibility for Xerox logos (.LGO) utilization. PRO Meta to PCL provides the same methods of handling logos as it does for fonts. These methods can be mixed and matched as appropriate for different logos and applications.
    PRO Meta to PCL can:
    • Automatically convert Xerox logos into PCL fonts and downloads them to the printer with each job
    • Convert Xerox logos into PCL fonts or images and downloaded in the PCL print file
    Image Handling

PRO Meta to PCL automatically converts Xerox images and .IMG files into PCL compressed images and automatically embeds the images in the output PCL file.

    Form Management

PRO Meta to PCL provides a very efficient and simple method of managing Xerox forms (.FRM). Xerox forms are stored in a library on the host. During the transform process, these forms are loaded, as they are needed. PRO Meta to PCL then accesses any resources that are needed for these forms and processes them automatically. Finally, the text on each form is put into a PCL macro, which is stored in the printer and accessed when it is needed in the document.

    Output Format

PRO Meta to PCL contains a device driver that creates HP PCL output files. These files can be printed on any printer that can support Hewlett Packard’s PCL Level 5.

The output PCL can be optimized through a number of run-time options which control the way that fonts are managed and the way that the PCL is constructed. For example, shading patterns can be made darker or lighter for specific printers or applications.

    Transform Control Options

Because PRO Meta to PCL was designed with an extensive set of control options, every facet of the transform process is controlled. Therefore, PRO Meta to PCL is a fit for many different environments.
