Braille Printing Services – what we do and how we do it…

Have questions about our Braille printing services? Need to know more about Braille and how we can help? Read on to find out more about our Braille services and production facilities…

Braille printing services are an important addition to any organization’s customer communications processes and requirements.

CrawfordTech’s Document Accessibility Services division produce output for clients in a wide range of alternative formats, such as Braille, Large-Print, audio CD and eText. Our secure facilities in Potsdam, NY, USA and Toronto, ON, Canada adhere to PCI Standards and deliver everything from one-off ad-hoc output through to monthly statement, bill and invoice creation.

Failure to provide Braille documents may result in penalties and sanctions, depending on the local legislation that affects you. Considerable settlements have been granted already in relation to section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act of 2005.

There are a number of considerations when looking at Braille printing services.

Braille may be transcribed on a character-by-character basis. Such a conversion is referred to as Grade 1 Braille and may also be described as ‘un-contracted Braille’. Because of the size of each character, it is much more common for documents and books to be transcribed using Grade 2 Braille, which uses a system of contractions that use less space and increase the speed of reading. The vast majority of content made available in Braille format is transcribed using Grade 2 contractions.

Crawford Technologies produce and distribute both Grade 1 and Grade 2 Braille (i.e. un-contracted or contracted) depending upon the needs of your clients.

We accept source material in any of the following formats:

  • PDF
  • Word .doc & .docx
  • AFP
  • PostScript
  • Xerox Metacode
  • Text (ASCII, EBCDIC etc.)
  • Most other print-stream or document file formats

What if your content includes graphs, charts and pictures? Our Braille Certified Alternate Format Subject Matter experts can help you to transcribe these elements properly for Braille and other alternative format output types.

Crawford Technologies will help you with your Braille printing needs regardless of whether you require a one-off ad-hoc transcription or if you need to produce regularly monthly customer communications, such as:

  • Braille statements
  • Braille invoices
  • Catalogues produced in Braille
  • Regular customer letters in Braille format

Our Document Accessibility Services division is part of a company that has spent over 15 years at the forefront of the transactional document industry; the world’s largest financial services, telecommunications, utilities and manufacturing companies trust in CrawfordTech’s software solutions to deliver millions of statements every month.
