Printstream Manipulation vs. Document Re-engineering

Printstream manipulation has been available for a number of years, whereas Document Re-engineering is relatively new. We are often asked what differentiates printstream manipulation from Document Re-engineering. The answer lies in that Document Re-engineering focuses on the uses for the documents, rather than the technology. Thus, whereas a printstream can be modified using a printstream manipulation tool to achieve some of the same results as re-engineering a document, most printstream manipulation tools are missing the ability to completely repurpose the documents while those are being manipulated.

Most printstream manipulation tools take very specialized expertise in order to use them. As well as understanding the document requirements, the user needs to fully understand the structure and content of the printstream that is being manipulated. This expertise is very specialized, expensive and hard to find. As a result, many organizations who use printstream manipulation products, find it very expensive and time-consuming to set up or change applications using a printstream manipulation tool.

In contrast, Document Re-Engineering products, such as PRO Document Enhancer Plus, provide a document-centric metaphor, which simplifies usage. It requires users to understand the documents, and the requirements that need to be implemented. This makes it easier for non-technical staff to set up and maintain applications.

Another difference is that Document Re-engineering solutions have the ability to change the format of the documents from one prinstream type to another during the re-engineering step. This makes it possible to repurpose printstreams into viewable formats such as PDF and HTML. Thus Document Re-engineering solutions can be used as a core component in creating multiple channel distribution strategies, electronic content management, and electronic document distribution processes.
